Good News/Bad News

February 22, 2008

What first? Good News – I’m back and healthy! As Rob can tell you, that flu sucked the life out of me! Then I got pnuemonia too. Damn near dead for awhile there. But I’m back, though not too excited about grooming and the fact that it just keeps snowing! Stop the snow dance, stop it now, and make up a warm and sunny dance! :)

Bad news – the main snowmobile, the $11,000 only 2 season old one, is one big pile of crap!!!! Seems the brain, the computer, just quit, and since the warranty was 30 seconds or 30 feet, whichever came first, we are stuck eating the cost of that. And we managed to somehow wreck the entire right shock/swingarm assembly in the deep snow (gotta mark those stumps better next year-with big sticks that don’t get buried) so we are in debt about $2600.00 just to get it running! Damn! Going to have to raise those fees next year…

The good old Forest Service Arctic Cat, though under-powered and old as the hills themselves, keeps on ticking, so, though we are back to the old days grooming wise – fence and manual groomers – we are still able to groom, and it’s actually pretty darn good.

We are grooming Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning this week – so, assuming I didn’t just jinx the Arctic Cat, we should have great skiing this weekend. Come out and enjoy it as we are about ready for a warm spell (do that dance) and when that happens we’ll quit grooming. So see you on the trail this weekend!

One last 10:00am group ski? Anyone? 1 lap skate warm-up followed by one lap hard?

Conditions Better Than we Thought

February 16, 2008

12K groomed for skating and classic skiing! Conditions excellent! The warm conditions settled the snow on Friday so we were able to skip a few steps and a few hours. Yahoo! Jeff Hammond will groom on Sunday morning. Thanks in advance Jeff.

PRVNSC/Vallecito

February 15, 2008

Grooming has been touching this week! Nick groomed on Thursday for four hours getting the road and East Creek in great shape. But low and behold along came more snow, wet and heavymaking Saturdays grooming difficult. But ROB will be there hoping to get at least 5K’s up and poliched! Come enjoy!!

Vallecito Nordic Skiing › Create New Post — WordPress
Nick got out to groom for four hours, packing the new wet snow with the snowmobile and was able to drag the sled for enough passes to allow skating on the road and EAst Creek. THANKS NICK!! BUT WHOOPS!!! Right after Nick knocked down the snow we got another 3-4 inches Thursday night. This means Saturdays grooming will we softer and narrower. But come ski ’cause the weather should be GREAT!!

A not so funny thing happened…

February 9, 2008

As Paul Simon sang “I don’t find this so amusing any more”. We didn’t realize when we were grooming with Roger that we had bent something up on his machine, and thus we were leaving a huge v-rut down the middle wherever we went. Oops! No problem though, Nick and I could fix it on Friday, right? No, not so fast. Our main machine, the one we thought was designed pretty stupid without a pull-start option, decided it had had enough of these reindeer games and refused to start. Nice. 2 hours later we gave up and Nick did what he could with the Artic Cat. Should be okay but certainly not the World Cup skiing we had hoped for. Next time I guess.

As for me, still sick, and very tired, and I’m going to Tucson where it is 80 and sunny. Hope my bike works….

World Cup!

February 8, 2008

Roger from the San Juan Sledders appeared out of no where and like Moses parting the waters saved us! I rode along and for 5 hours watched 2 feet of powder disappear in front of me and when I looked back it was perfect corduroy (sorry, no spell check on this program). Wow – we need a snowcat! Not only perfect skiing, but a heated cab with radios and GPS and everything – Roger even brought along cookies! And we never got stuck once – well, close a couple of times, but that’s another nice thing about a snowcat, they dig themselves out!

The end result is World Cup worthy skiing this weekend – get out and enjoy!

Grooming update for Friday 2/8/08

February 7, 2008

Nick is going to give it a go on Friday, and if I can quit coughing I’m going to try to give him a hand. So, the skiing should be pretty good by Saturday and great by Sunday! No – we aren’t even going to try the beaches – so it will just be the road and the campgrounds.

Hopefully I’ll see you on the trail – I’ll be the one coughing up a lung :)
