Fall Crust = Great skiing!

November 29, 2008

Great skiing this morning on the beach -perfect crust! I skiied for 2 hours, skated, and Rob and Dianne came up too. If you don’t believe me about how great it was, ask them. Really really great skiing. Will it still be good on Sunday? I think so, but only going out to try it will tell – I’m planning on trying it in the morning, maybe 9:00. Don’t forget the rock skis, you coud get away with good skis if you were really careful, but rock skis allows you to go anywhere without fear. Still don’t have rock skis – get some! You’re missing out!
I wonder where Durango Nordic was training today?

Snow, more like mush

November 28, 2008

Well, I tried – Nick and I got all the stuff up to the trailhead Wednesday with high hopes for the Thanksgiving day storm. I know, we jinxed it, and sure enough only 3 very wet and sloppy inches fell. Still, wanting to try out our “zero depth” trail work, I tried. Groomed, after first swearing like a sailor that the damn snowmobile wouldn’t start, and then skied – skated even. It was terrible, just terrible, as Charles Barkley would say. It’s not that there wasn’t enough snow, there was, it was more that it never got cold, so grooming and then skiing on the slush pretty much just brought up all the dirt. Still, as I said in a previous post, a bad day skiing beats most anything else – sure beats running or biking in the slush. Saturday I plan on grooming up at the top of Middle Mountain. Anyone want to help? At least it will be cold up there…

Saturday AM update: It got cold enough that I’m going to ski the beach instead of grooming Middle Mountain, I’ll let you know how it is…

A new season

November 16, 2008

Well, even though it is 65 degrees out there today, and bike riding seems like a good idea, it is time to start thinking skiing again. And I look forward to it more than ever this year – I’ve ran and biked more than ever and I am ready to do something else. I’ve already been skiing 3 times, and every time I finish I think ” a bad day skiing is still better than a good day running”! Yes, you read that right, I’ve already skiied twice at Vallecito – even groomed once already (don’t miss that!), and once at the top of Middle Mountain – not much snow but our motto around here is: if it’s white and slippery we’ll ski it! My rock skis were in need of some grinding anyway…And with the 10 day forecast calling for hot and dry conditions, rock skiing seems to be the only option. Good thing we had a trail work day at Vallecito this fall, where we picked even small rocks as we wanted to be able to ski on “zero depth”…
